Living outside of Greece we can forget how big Easter is for Greece. It’s like how Christmas is for Americans. One thing we haven’t really reproduced here is the tradition of Rouketopolemos.
Homemade “rockets” that are a lot of times 1,000 X the size of bottle rockets, are made by each neighboring church and at midnight the war begins. This is intense and the rockets go whizzing by over everyone’s head.
“Christ is Risen” is heard all around and the celebration of the resurrection begins. Here is a close look at a Rouketopolemo in Chios Island. We got behind enemy lines and took these shots just to bring you a little part of Greek Easter tradition that we tend to miss out here in America.
Enjoy and Happy Easter!
